Life has kept me busier than my blogging. Since 2017, I've had three boys! They are now ages 5.5, 3.5, and 1.9!

As we approach November, I'm gearing up for a significant milestone in my running journey – my first half marathon since becoming a mom. While I haven't been consistently blogging, I have been consistently running, leisurely. Over the past few years, I've participated in more than a handful of 5k and 10k races. I have yet to add these to the Race Results widget on my blog. None of them were record-breaking in terms of speed or personal bests, but they've helped me stay connected to my passion for running, and I even added a new category - the stroller division!

The races I found records for include:

Sep 2016 She Is Beautiful Santa Barbara 2016 10k in a time of 01:12:45 >> 11:44 min/mile

Santa Barbara Half Marathon 06/2016

Thanksgiving Day 4 Miler 2016

Los Angeles Chinatown Firecracker 5/10K 2017

2017 Gaucho Gallop 5K Benefit Race 04/17 36:56 >> 11:53 MIN/MI

2018 Santa Barbara Chardonnay 10-Miler 4/18 2:06:23.5 >> 12:38

5-mile Bumbleride Baby Mama with Baby Finisher (Stroller Division) - Sep 2018 01:20:14 >> 16:02 min/mile

2019 McConnell's 5k 34:15 >> 11:01 MIN/MI

10K - Bumbleride Baby Mama 5 Miler with Baby finisher item (Stroller Division - Sep 2019

2022 Resolution Day Run 5k 37:25 >> 12:02 MIN/MI

She.is.beautiful Santa Cruz 10k - 2022 1:11:19 >> 11:30 min/mile

Dole Great Race Agoura Hills 10k - April 2022 01:17:03 >> 12:25 min/mile

2023 Resolution Run 5k 37:24.8 >> 12:04/M

2023 Superbowl 5k 33:41.9 >> 10:52/M

She Is Beautiful Santa Barbara 2023 10k in a time of 1:20:47 >> 13:01 min/mile

Looking ahead, I'm eager to set the foundation for working towards those coveted PRs. With the big 4-0 on the horizon next year, I've read that your 40s can be one of the best decades for running. It's said that you accumulate a wealth of knowledge and experience by this age, which can greatly benefit your running performance. So, I'm excited about the journey that lies ahead.

In 2021, we sadly said goodbye to our beloved Mabel. As our youngest boy grew and became more stable on his feet, we decided to bring a new furry friend into our home. This time, we had the opportunity to welcome the type of dog I had always dreamed of; a runner – Rocco, is a 5-year-old Husky mix. He's not only loving and gentle but also full of boundless enthusiasm!

In terms of health and injuries, apart from pregnancy-related changes, I've been fortunate not to have faced any major health or running setbacks. I did battle bronchitis/pneumonia last winter, and since March, I've been dealing with a mild to moderate Achilles heel/tendon issue. Fortunately, it seems to be improving overall, though it does flare up occasionally.

The other huge change to report regarding running is that I've gone from listening to music during training and races to listening to audiobooks and podcasts. Since 2016 I committed to reading more books consistently setting a yearly goal between 20-35, and the only way I can do it is with audiobooks these days.

This post is prompted by a race I participated in over the past weekend, Sep 9, 2023, the She is Beautiful 10k. It turned out to be my slowest 10k race to date; my chip time was 1:20:47 >> 13:01 min/mile. So, I'm essentially hitting the reset button on my blogging journey, concurrently with my disciplined running journey, and plan to document my progress as I strive for significant improvements.

My goal is to shed a total of 20 pounds, with the aim of losing at least 10 of them permanently by the end of this year and the remaining 10 by my birthday next August.

On the horizon, I have a 10k race next weekend, the Goleta Lemon Festival Fun Run. Following that, I've signed up for the Santa Barbara Veteran's Day Half Marathon, and, if all goes well, the Santa to the Sea Half Marathon in December, which is a favorite of mine. Anyway, that's all for now. I hope to write a blog post on this week's race, then a photo montage of all the races I missed (that I have pictures for), and next week, I'm hoping for a debrief on the Lemon Fest 10k! Until then - keep putting one foot in front of the other, friends!
Oliviahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698178595843334781noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8899497644270291539.post-63427818998907851722016-06-13T13:35:00.002-07:002016-06-13T13:36:00.759-07:00

A couple of weekends ago, I ran the State Street mile in Santa Barbara which is downhill on the main street downtown to benefit the Victim Witness Program of the Santa Barbara District Attorney's office. I PRd in my age group cutting 13 second from my mile run at this same race in 2009. It was pretty funny because when the 30-39 year olds took off, I pretty quickly found myself in last place. Although I was running swiftly (for my usual pace), I felt as though I was strolling down state street in slow motion. Having the entire street to myself and waving to acquaintances, friends, and family - in this small town, I felt like I was coasting at 20 minute miles. I was shocked to set a PR. Go, me! I must admit however, I have not been training for a short run at all and the night before the race, I went wine tasting then ended up having a couple of cocktails before midnight. I may want to in the future, train for this race to find out how fast I can really go.

However, I did just find out from 23 and me that as Baymax from Big Hero 6 would say it, "I'm not fast." They reported the following, "Olivia, your fast-twitch muscle fibers likely do not have the alpha-actinin-3 protein...Endurance athletes tend to have more slow-twitch muscle, while sprinters tend to have more fast-twitch muscle. Some of the variation in fast-twitch muscle depends on a protein called alpha-actinin-3." So alas, it looks like running longer rather than faster seems to be my destiny - one that I'm plenty content with. Didn't really need a $200 test to tell me that...just look at my previous race times. Haha

In addition to my one mile dash, I enlisted my husband and my dog to come out and play and participate in the DOG MILE. We also made plans to meet up with Finley the golden doodle and of course her mom and dad. The dog mile featured maybe 50 dogs plus their owners racing down state street. Some bolted, the winner finished in 4:13. Some dogs walked, the most amusing to me - a cocker spaniel like mine - hopped wildly from the floor onto her owners butt and back on the floor as she advanced down the hill. Mabel our 10 year old cocker had a blast and so did we, participating in a fitness event for the family and the community. Can't wait to do it again!Oliviahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698178595843334781noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8899497644270291539.post-10277911008076634242016-04-24T21:06:00.001-07:002016-04-24T21:22:31.867-07:00New PR! I'll make this post short but sweet.

I have a new PR in the 10k distance. After having missed a PR by 15 seconds last February, I focused during training and it came to fruition in Ojai.

OFFICIAL RESULTS 1:00:09.2 (9:42/Mi) beating my previous 10k PR of 1:06:59 by 6 min, 50 seconds!

So I did that 21-day no sugar, carb or dairy during the first 21 days of December and reached 134lbs. I ate like any normal person would from the 21st to January 3rd but I'm glad to be eating well again and happy to report I'm at 136 lbs despite the brie cheese, the holiday carbs, wine and treats!

It was so amazingly easy to give up so many processed foods and bad stuff that I've decided to continue eating without sugars, carbs and dairy Mon- Fri and enjoying in moderation all the other stuff on the weekends.

Additionally to the great achievement in weight, this past August I returned to running. Ran a total of 313 miles (which is why Zuckerberg's 365-mile goal doesn't seem astounding). I ran 4 races and PRd in 2 of them. One was a default PR because it was a new distance, but the other was a nice Thanksgiving surprise. The 5k although it wasn't a PR it was a second best time for me.

12/15 Santa to the Sea Half - 2:39:21 »» 12:10
03/15 Race to the Row 8k - 00:59:43 (PR) »» 11:56
11/15 Turkey Trot 4 mi - 39:49 (PR) »» 9:57
10/15 Rock n' Roll Hollywood 5k - 30:16 »» 9:45

Sadly I did not PR on my 10th half marathon, but I was pretty proud of running a 10th half marathon and that it was injury free, and my time was not bad but also not great - rather average for me.

This year, like most others I ran the New Year's Resolution 5k and while I did not get a 5k PR it was the best New Year's Resolution time I've ever had (31:14) which makes me optimistic about the upcoming year!
Good news. I'm down to 143 lbs. Getting closer to my goal weight of 135 lbs.

Equally good news to report. I have run 65.3 miles in the months of Sep - Mid November. We had our honeymoon and a move in between but I am now only 3 weeks out from my half marathon race.

I did a the Rock n' Roll Hollywood 5k with my husband and rocked it! Came in with my second best 5k time ever - 30:15. I'm thinking if I find a holiday 5k in the area I may try for a PR.

The last race before my 1/2 marathon is a classic for my sister and I. We'll be doing the Goleta 4 Turkey Trot. My time to beat will be 40:52. Lastly, we've begun another DietBet. Last one of the year and going strong.

I'm doing the Fredricson Protocol for ITBS as well as a couple additional stretches. I'm also doing a 30-day squats, sit ups, crunches and plank challenge to strengthen the core.
However, that means we celebrate with outings, friends and food too much too fast.

Last Thursday I took him on a birthday dinner and froyo, Friday we did a happy hour with friends and Patxi's Pizza (at 500+ cals per slice) for dinner - and I made cheesecakes for this celebration. Saturday we went to a wedding and Sunday we went to a brewery with his family for beer and deep fried food, cheesecake again, and brownies. Monday was a day of left overs plus hot Cheetos - one of my faves. During the whole weekend I went on three 2+ mi walks and one 2.75 run. The entire celebration cost me roughly 1.4 lbs and put me back one week and one day. Oops.
Although we were working out and feeling in shape. We had a bit of a round shape. Admittedly we were enjoying food, all kinds and in large quantities.

May 2015 I got on a fancy high tech scale that was given to us for our wedding by a beautiful couple who is super into fitness. To my dismay, my weight was 162lbs. I've never been this heavy. EVER. Maybe it was that I finally hit 30 in 2014 or that I got married the same year or the hiatus of consistent workout routines. In any case it felt terrible.

Shortly thereafter I signed up for www.dietbet.com and created a diet bet to challenge my friends to lose 4% of their body weight in 28 days. In my case that was 6 lbs. At the same time my husband and I found a two-month swimming groupon deal for a masters program. We try to go at least 2 days a week and sometimes as much as 4 days per week. I won my first dietbet, and my husband joined it and won also! We did so by tracking our food intake using myfitnesspal app and by working out consistently. After doing so, we took a weekend off. The next week we joined our second dietbet. This time I kept myself to 1200-1300 calories but no more. My husband and I again won our second diet bet! He lost 20 lbs and I've lost 13 lbs! I had never before had to worry about my weight, because I was burning calories just by running, training for fun races and to meet new goals.

I felt aggravated and annoyed about letting myself get so heavy for being only 5'2. Today I'm down to 148.4 lbs. While this is not an amazing weight it is a big difference from 162. We are taking 2 weeks off to enjoy our birthdays.

Upon returning home I will work on getting and staying between 135-140. I'll be ready to committ to training for another race. First I'll need to develop a base. Currently, my best is running 2.46 miles at an 11:17 min/mile pace. It's not bad at all.

The key will be to keep watching my food intake and keep using that foam roller. Squats, core and back stregthening will be my friends. I can't wait to get back into a normal running routine. I miss being out there in start corrals - and writing about all the experiences I've had.

March 01, 2015 Race to the Row 8k was my first race in 447 days - but who's counting?

The name is the 408k but it's a misnomer because it's not 408 kilometers - just 8. It's called the 408k because that's the local area code. Oh that reminds me. In Dec 2014, I moved to the bay area - leaving my beachside hometown behind. I didn't love moving but Mark got a job out in Mountain View and so we moved.

I ran somewhat consistently as I prepared for the race. I was consistent too about rolling my IT Band on running days.

Race day went well. I had never run an 8k so I had no PR for comparison.
My time was 00:59:43 that's an 11:56 pace, which is not terrible for being the first race after a 447 day hiatus. My goal at mile 3 was to keep it under an hour. As I was seeing the finish line, I thought I was past my goal time, because the timer had on it, the timer from the start of the race (not my chip time) and I almost gave up. When I remembered the difference of race start to chip time, I hustled! Still had enough hustle to come in at my goal time. Yay.
Personally it was a great year otherwise. I travelled to Seattle, Israel and Mexico. The best part is that I got married! Maybe I needed time away from what I had been doing to focus on other important aspects of life.

I saw my chiropractor several times hoping he could fix the IT band issue

In March I decided I needed to try something different. I paid for coaching at the gym. I became best friends with the foam roller.

I didn't stay consistent though because it was painful. I got into a habit of doing squats - but then I stopped.

During the year, Mark and I dusted off our bikes and sometimes went bike riding to Carpinteria for wine tasting or to visit with friends.
After a tri, a half and a 4 miler I was ready to set an amazing PR for myself. I was hoping to set a PR yet, I was feeling so good I went too fast. My half PR is 2:23:21. I was going so fast that I hit the halfway point at 1:10:55. After the halfway point, I began getting a pain on my side leading down to my knee. I never knew about the tibial band - but now I do. I finished the half by walking jus under the 3-hour mark at 2:59:04.6. My second half of the race took 1:48:09. I was crying because I felt I could've had a great finish. Sure it's not winning the Olympics but after the year I had - I expected to do better. My mom was at the finish line and she looked worried.

My leg was hurt but my soul was crushed. Everything hurt for days later. For the first year in long time, I didn't start 2014 with a 5k race. It sucked!
Ran the Santa Barbara Half Marathon for the third time. The second time doing the new course. Actually the old Santa Barbara Half Marathon was my first long distance race ever!

This one was one of the easiest races I've had. It was enjoyable and easily started and finished. Didn't want to burn out so I didn't go too fast especially because I had my mind set to setting a goal in the December Santa to the Sea Half.

Saw a couple of friends, and the new boyfriend came out to cheer me on! :)

I stopped blogging about sports because I was busy running, swimming, riding and racing back to back. Logically, I got injured and stopped running for almost a year and a half. Here's what happened in between.

The Carpinteria Triathlon went off without a hitch. I had a blast! Hated the wetsuit I rented. Felt like I was choking in it and couldn't breathe. Eventually, the swim ended and I was on to use the bike I borrowed. The bike portion went great - as I recall. The practice of the hills really paid off. I thought I was ready for the run, yet a 10k never felt so tough. My legs tightened and cramped up. I was so glad when it was over! But it was A LOT of fun. Especially all the training. I can't wait to be in the place where I can train again for another one of these. Maybe a sprint. Hoping to get a base by the end of 2015 (although we expect another move - hopefully back home) and a honeymoon in September.

The Carpinteria Triathlon on Sep 29th. (And concurrently the Nov 9 SB Marathon)

Started unofficially on May 11th with a 21.1 mile ride.

The first three weeks after the long bike ride I did two activities every single day: biking, running, swimming.

The next five weeks I've followed a schedule from http://www.beginnertriathlete.com

In total since May I have spent 40 hours either biking or running and logged 305 bike miles and 102 running miles. (Not including the YTD 102 Jan-Apr Miles).

Riding a bike (a mountain bike) has been a lot of fun. This has been the biggest surprise because I have never before enjoyed bike riding - much. I rode the entire course (almost) still gotta get up the entire Ortega Ridge and Toro Canyon. (.5 mile ride is a killer at the end). At least there are little surprises left. (I hope). I'm going to borrow a road bike. I'm excited that Michelle R. responded to my post today when I finally set out to ask to borrow one. I hear that a road bike it's much better for a tri but I'm a bit concerned about making the transition to a different bike - only cause it's different.

Running has not yet been too challenging because they've been 3 and 5 milers. Yesterday I had a surprisingly good 5 miler - which leads to the second part of WHY I would do this. (The first part, because a tri is on the bucket list.) The second, because a tri is excellent cross training especially leading to a full. I don't think I could do a full training alone - my left knee definitely feels worn a bit when I push it too much. (eek).

I've switched out the olympic tri training schedule run part for an 18 week marathon plan beginning last week which should fall nicely into the other schedule except for the two weeks leading up to the tri which include the 18 and 20 milers. Oops. I'll cross that bridge when I get there is kind of my thought for now. I did get to run with dolphins one day! They were at very close distance from shore maybe 20 feet?

The five miler days takes me on a trip above the Carp bluffs overlooking the rookery.

I've had a chance to do only one track work out - because I'd rather work out in the morning than at night. (Especially on run days only which are one workout days by design). There's something about being on the track that makes it impossible to do an easy workout on it. I really ought to plan at least one track day a week.

Swimming has been probably the least fun. I've done it for the most part at 24 hour fitness. The upside - now : One more foursquare Mayorship.

I did go for one ocean swim - and that was not very cold! The seaweed grossed me out a little and it took me a while to get past the feeling like I was going nowhere, fast - and get a rhythm of sorts down.

Swimming is hard because it is boring and when it is not boring, I find it hard to control my mind for so long (up to an hour at a time). One more sucky part: No opportunity for pictures! Also, I will have to figure out the wetsuit part...eek.

All in all, the first 8 weeks have been fun. Accident and injury free so far - knock on wood. I am 12 weeks out from race day - so I'm sure I'll have plenty of time to master a road bike, Toro Canyon, Ortega Ridge, cold water and faster 10ks. I've double checked my calendar that I did not double book a wedding on race weekend (as has happened before - doh). This race training comes at a good time when I have very little else imposing a routine or balance in my life - so I'm thankful everyday to work toward something.
I'm greatly enjoying switching things up. Below is last weeks activity log. This next week through Friday is another happy go lucky - pre training week and then come Sat the 1st I will begin my first official week of #triTraining. The goal for this upcoming week in addition to not missing a work out is to drink more water at least 2 water bottles per day.
I'm ready for a couple of big athletic accomplishments in part because the achievement is something you claim forever - yet the training process always makes you better.

Here's the dilemma. Nov 3rd I'll run the Santa Barbara International Marathon (my 3rd), however, I will also be training for the Carpinteria Triathlon which takes place Sep 29th. The only question that remains is, which distance should I train for?

A couple of weeks ago after I had decided to shoot for the short race I went out on a bike ride to see where my biking fitness level was at. I put in an enjoyable 21 miles. Late that night, I looked up the race distance only to find that the Sprint Course is only about 9 miles. A few days later I did the 9 mile course (the exact course) and although I can improve my time, there was little insurmountable about it.
My plan for May 13 - June 10th is to just put in time doing all three exercises - not too much or too little, but an enjoyable amount. From there I will begin a 16 week tri training and during week 5 I will switch out the running component for the 16 week marathon training plan. The main challenges about any size tri is that I train in a pool not in open water - but I'll try a few night moves (short summer swim/run events) to get ready. The pool I use is at my gym and it's only 50ft so needless to say I have to keep my mind engaged in completing the repetitive laps. Another challenge is my chunky mountain bike - I know it's good enough for the sprint, I don't know if that's also the case for the Olympic distance but I presume it might be - since I rode 20 mi. with no problems. Lastly, I have never done the 3 events together - obviously. Oh and here's the magical thing, I found my dead heart rate monitor and just happened to have a new battery the right size for it, so I was able to record and observe my times from the get go!

I immediately tuned into the streaming radio coverage from Boston on my iPad.

First I worried about folks I knew that were out there. Next, I worried about the people affected. Lastly and in the most common way in which we experience empathy, I imagined what it would be like to be there.

The first explosion happened 4:09:52 after the start of the race - had I for some reason been running Boston I thought, I'd be an hour or more from the finish line - but my mom -who is my biggest support in the sport - would just be arriving at the finish line, as she has in each of my last 9 big races.

I couldn't correctly begin to imagine the chaos and fear of being there. Unlike in many other instances of national tragedies, where I can feel complex feelings, in this case, I only felt sad for the entire occurrence - and perhaps it's because I could imagine being there so much more than other situations.

During the day I wondered if the perpetrator was maybe a runner or close to the running community? Who else but a runner - even a bad runner like myself - would know what Boston means to the sport?! Heck, when a runner speaks the word 'Boston' s/he only refers to The Marathon most of the time. Boston to any serious runner (in commitment not necessarily in achievement) at some point has set their sight on qualifying for Boston.

This morning I went for my first run in a couple of weeks.

While I was on my run today I thought about the people there. Starting with runners - although we're not all of a same mold, marathoners have characteristics we share and these include:

Passion: Something drives us. Whatever it is, we have an endless supply of it.
Determination: Defeat is unacceptable to us
Realism and Optimism: We know how to gauge danger in a way, but hope to push the limits to the very edge.
We know what it's like to be alone. In order to race a marathon you needed to have trained for miles and miles alone. This means, that marathoners, I believe are thinkers because with or without music at some point you're alone with your thoughts and they carry you for hours.

Each one of us, then has these fascinating traits - mind you, I have learned that your biggest strengths, when magnified is your biggest weakness so at often we're seen as obstinate, dangerous and relentless - but hey! Additionally many of us have either willingly garnered support of friends and family, or reluctantly, but they - them - those around us that come to watch, are lit and somehow energized by any of those components. All of these thoughts compounded means that the area was and was looked upon as full of excitement, hope enthusiasm, passion, determination, optimism, and profoundness and suddenly it was blown away.

I really enjoyed this blog post that talked about the spectators. It's conclusion was right on the money: "One of the many puzzling aspects of yesterday's attacks was the question of what, exactly, the perpetrators thought they'd accomplish by targeting what basically amounts to a celebration of human tenacity. If anything, the tragedy in Boston will further solidify the bond between runner and spectator. And when the Chicago marathon happens this October, I'll show up to run harder, and they'll show up to cheer louder. If anyone thought this attack would discourage the runners or the watchers, they've clearly never been to a marathon."

To best encapsulate my reflections on this event, the articles, news and posts that I have seen, this nails it: "If you're trying to defeat the human spirit, marathoners are the wrong group to target."

Oliviahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698178595843334781noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8899497644270291539.post-16721970090339245052012-09-03T22:43:00.001-07:002012-09-03T22:53:30.429-07:00Pier to Peak: ✔

Spent 75 real training miles in August, 52 base building miles in July and 27 'getting into some sort of routine' miles in June. A total of 154 miles later I was 'ready' for Pier to Peak in Santa Barbara. In June and up through mid-July, I was still doubting I'd sign up or that I'd be able to train. By mid-July, I said, what the heck and just signed up.

The race was good, ended up doing quite a bit of walking up there. Kudos to Jake Clinton, race organizer. Some miles were grueling...I'm thinking numbers #9 and #10. In mile 12 I posted my 5th fastest mile of this race...go figure!

Finished the 2 water bottles I carried w/half gatorade, half water, and got one refilled with water once for a total of a lot of water! (3 Liters)

The race itself was very well organized. I'd like to complain that I never understood the course map...but the truth is, I think I never wanted to understand how exactly it would all work out, I knew the basics; Sterns Wharf to La Cumbre Peak. 4000 feet elevation gain and 13.1 miles was enough knowledge, no need to know the hill grades or elevation gains per mile. To be honest, I didn't look at the temperature either. I was concerned when there was no marine layer to be found at the start, so I never checked the weather. There was plenty of food and drink at the end and I met some great folks along the way. I wouldn't recommend this as a first ever race, but I think it's challenging enough for the spirit. Some races are made for the legs, this one is far more for the heart; not the beating one, but the motivational one.

After having finished this race I'm left with one lesson: maybe you don't train perfectly for everything, some things you just have to do 'em and get them done. As a perfectionist control freak, this is a tough lesson, but almost liberating. What other mountain do I have to conquer without a memorized course map?

The more dangerous and almost impossible byproduct of this race is this question: If I can finish this race, what other race can I do that I've been afraid of?

Pier to PeakFour years ago I learned of the Pier to Peak half marathon that takes place on Labor Day weekend in Santa Barbara, that gains 3996 feet in elevation, starting at the dolphins by the beach and ending at La Cumbre Peak. Because of my political involvment, one of the highlights of Labor Day is that it marks the unofficial beginning to campaign season. While this tough race seemed appealing it looked as if though it required a lot of heavy training, so I put it on the list of races to run in future years.

Two summers later, I began training for the race for a couple of weeks. One day I asked a friend to drive the course with me just to check it out. The road was never ending and we don't in fact know if we ever reached the top or not. I psyched out and scratched it off the list of races to run.

The next summer I vacillated a serious consideration of the race. It was a campaign season, and interesting one since I didn't work on a campaign in the same capacity as previous years, but training would've been hard. I figured I'd make a decision within the first week of August. The decision was simple and it was a definitive NO - since I fractured my shoulder on August 1st. That would leave training and all running out of the question.

This year I posted on Facebook that I was thinking about doing it...Ms. Kristiana said something to the effect of - just do it. I considered it a little longer and on July 29th I finally signed up. While I had spent most of July building a base mileage I started 'training' at the beginning of August. I'll be able to get up to an 11 mile run in by the week before the race, but I don't know where I can work on hills...

Jude, a friend told me that her and her then- boyfriend ran it and were almost crawling toward the end. But recommended it as worthwhile. A couple of friends mentioned on Facebook that they're doing it for a second, and some even a third time. While it sounds like a grueling race, it must also be rewarding one to finish.

This is the course map:

If it goes well - meaning that I finish, I think I'll be in good timing to train for the SB full in November. The first 2 loops (10 miles) of the full is the same loop that I ran daily for YEARS! The second half of that race is the 'SB half marathon' which I've already run before, so I'd have home court advantage to finally PR.

P2P will be my 7th half marathon, and one that will be plenty challenging, I am anticipating. I'm still really excited about it - it's my nerdy way of celebrating my 28th year. This upcoming year will be one of just doing things! Not in a wreckless manner, but with just enough caution to not be deemed wreckless, but not as measured as my M.O. We'll see how this approach goes.Oliviahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698178595843334781noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8899497644270291539.post-67265920263887883362012-01-10T09:49:00.000-08:002012-01-10T10:00:18.337-08:00Runners don't always like to go run...Let me clear up a misconception. For as excited and disciplined of a crowd as we are - Recreational Runners - we don't always like to go run.

Case in point. My 5:30AM alarm went off, my skylight was pitch dark. My 6:00AM alarm went off and I managed to turn it off. At 7:30AM my sister Facetimed my iPad, and I pretended not to hear it, so she Facetimed my iPhone.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 280px; height: 280px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUjp9Vo8JP08ZrfS9ou6TM779fD9rzRh55s8F-xtCQtBKzYlxQgejJFCzp6tID4WSeKE4hNS0njWtZPNpw2AAf24jINWi6aCooRqOMcfT-vR_39XWJPaOjT0glYvv80h1V3Jkq336YSHPd/s320/78-off-flannel-sheet-set.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696064002608737522" />
Okay, I was up and contemplated staying in the flannel sheets a little longer on this average winter day. But finally after much consideration, I got my butt in running pants, grabbed a sweatshirt from the clean laundry got my shoes on, and was grudgingly out the door.

Because it was late, I could only do a short run, which means it had to be faster than a longer leisurely run...

It is true that runners love running but the act of having to go on a run: getting out of bed, getting dressed and out the door is a whole different story from time to time. Or am I wrong?Oliviahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698178595843334781noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8899497644270291539.post-12952337424541493142012-01-01T22:59:00.001-08:002012-01-01T23:02:12.144-08:00New Year's Resolution 5k

The weather was perfect for one of the larger road races in town. More than a hundred runners were ready for a beachside race.

Because my debit card number had been stolen and recently cancelled, I mailed in our check for my sister's and my registration on Thursday and was assured by the race organizer that it would be received by the time of the race - but it wasn't so with only seven minutes to go before the race start my pukey sister and I reregistered... We got to start on time although my time wasn't impressive to say the least, I'm glad we were out there to start off the year on the right foot!

5k 1/1/2012 - 35:58:5

Cheers to hoping that you started 2012 doing some running, without a hangover or any other hitch.

Location:Santa Barbara
Oliviahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698178595843334781noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8899497644270291539.post-77818757077055266592011-12-22T16:27:00.000-08:002011-12-31T09:32:07.423-08:002011- 2 Halves, no fulls, plenty of of 5ks{EAV:6e225f1fbc9f8912}
2011 was a fun, laid back, mediocre racing year for me, however living in Santa Barbara every year is a great running year!

I'm happy to report there were NO running injuries this year. Yay. While I did break my shoulder and it did put me out for a few months, it was not running related.

2011 Summary

- Logged 350 miles - that's pretty low.
- I ran Ojai 2 Ocean and the Las Vegas half marathon. Loved the first, but not the second.
- Downgraded my Montecito half marathon to a 10k cause it was so unbelievably unorganized!
- Ran a lot more of the nite moves than I have before (4 or 5) then I broke my shoulder and couldn't continue.
- Missed State Street Mile - I want to say because I was sick?
- Sold my Wine Country Half Bib at the last possible minute because I double booked it as the same day as a friend's wedding.
- No PRs.

In 2012 I'm looking for a few things
- Another full marathon
- PR in a full marathon
- I'm considering a 10 mile trail race
- A 5k PR
- No running or other injuries that will put me out for anything longer than an average cold would...

One of the highlight of 2011 was the medal rack my best friend made, so I could display my medals :)

Cheers to hoping that you had as good of a running year as I did if not better!

{EAV:6e225f1fbc9f8912}Oliviahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698178595843334781noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8899497644270291539.post-63937247341799894072011-10-17T01:21:00.001-07:002011-10-17T01:27:20.551-07:00Vegas Bound - Rock & Roll 1/2Before this week, I had run a total of 15 miles since Aug 1st. Well really Sep 17ish. (I fractured my shoulder which derailed training and running the Pier to Peak and the SB 1/2. Last week I ran 5.5 miles because I hardly have time to breathe, right now. After I pulled 2 back to back 12 hour days of just sitting on my comp, I had to get out an run on the sbcc track and had a lot of fun. I'm very impressed I wasn't off kilter more. I feel like I can get to 13 by the time 7 weeks roll around.

Either way I signed up for this big race and booked a place at the Stratosphere cause I could use doing something fun this year. I think this will be great! Yay. It's a night time run on the strip - probably cold but maybe not TOO cold.Oliviahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698178595843334781noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8899497644270291539.post-30360955810145273502011-09-07T19:16:00.000-07:002011-09-07T19:25:17.164-07:00Run - if you canUrgh - really? I find myself saying this again, but it's worth repeating.

You know on days when you choose not to run, because you have to get up too early or work harder to get you work finished? Or sometimes we're just not in the mood to run, or would rather do nothing... there comes days where you'll regret these decisions...

So last year I was sidelined with a stress fracture for 3 months, and although I did an ok job running after that and completed another half early this year, on August 1st the beginning of a good running season with plenty of races on the horizon, I busted my shoulder. (6 weeks in a sling, a few more of physical therapy) and I'm on week 5.

Days like yesterday and today that are absolutely fabulous Santa Barbara days, I would not be caught without running if it were absolutely impossible. And days like today really make me regret the days I don't run when I could have run.

Tonight I tweeted (@osum) "Good thing I still have a busted wing I know for a fact if that weren't the case I would ditch tonight's work and school and go on a run!"
Oliviahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698178595843334781noreply@blogger.com1
